Techniques Used in Alfred Hitchcock's The Rear Window.
In Psycho (1960), Sam thinks his debt is too much to overcome, and therefore thinks a marriage wouldn’t work. But in Rear Window (1954), marriage itself is given a negative connotation. Women are nagging husbands throughout the movie.In Psycho, Hitchcock allows the audience to become a subjective character within the plot to enhance the film’s psychological effects for an audience that is forced to recognise its own neurosis and psychological inadequacies as it is compelled to identify, for varying lengths of time, with the contrasting personalities of the film’s main characters.Rear Window and Psycho 0 Comments The opening of Rear window begins with the camera moving through an apartment window, it surveys the local area from the same position, almost as if someone is looking out of their window, this by use of subjective camera.
From Rear Window, both of the narrators (i.e. Hitchcock and Jeff) reflects Jeff psychological conditions such as anxiety because of career and marriage from the neighbor’s life through the cinematic technology such as camera movement, framing and editing.A main theme in Rear Windows is voyeurism, exhibited by Jimmy Stewart’s character Jeff Jeffries. Similar theme is also present in Psycho with Anthony Perkin’s character Norman Bates, but, as opposed to Rear Window, Psycho doesn’t use it as the spine of the story. Reasons for the behaviour differ in the films too.
Voyeurism. As a filmmaker, Alfred Hitchcock was always acutely aware of the communal experience of moviegoing. Many of his characters are voyeurs, like Psycho' s Norman Bates and, of course, L.B. Jefferies. By filming Rear Window from Jeff's point of view, Hitchcock places his viewer in Jeff's voyeuristic mindset.
